Now That's a pretty cool story Husker!!
I don't know if I'm a dork and need to get a life or if I'm getting old or what, But I always enjoy hearing a persons "Story"!!
Going that long without a customer rejecting or returning something is a pretty good indicator the Quality Control guy is earning his keep!
That is a tough job - If it's anything like how we do it - it can be a downright frustrating job as well...
I've had some reluctant "hands-on" experience with the QC guy at work...
We recently had a fellow get "promoted" to the new QC guy...
He is the same guy I spent 5 years in the lathe area with.
The same guy that gave me all the heavy and shit parts to make on 2 lathes while he stood there, thumb in ass and ran one lathe...
He sat there and watched as my back deteriorated to the point where I was going to get fired or they had to find me something else to do.
And when they got me a "desk job" in engineering - he whined and squealed - - and I don't know what the dip-stick expected...
He worked me to death and wanted more - I think he was too blind or stupid to see what was going on...
Thank Goodness the shop foreman could see it!!
And this fellow was an excellent lathe programmer and set-up guy - I used to think he was pretty intelligent.
Now that I look back on it - our company bought 2 new lathes in 1994 and gave him all the time he needed to figure them out.
These were the only machines he ran for a long long time!!
He was the top "lathe guy" for 20 years and had many, many different people help him over the years - nobody lasted very long with him.
Some only lasted a week!! I had the worlds record - lasting 5 years there.
Well, a few years later, they hired this guys son to work in the lathe area.
He's a pretty sharp fellow - a graduate from Wyo Tech and a mechanic that had a job in ND in the oil business until it went south.
Then this amazing miracle happened...
I spent 5 years being this guys n*gger and has a very basic understanding on how to write just parts of a program for a lathe.
I could program a drilling cycle and a tap cycle - but not much else.
I figured that out by studying the program language myself.
And the miracle??
His son was here about 3 month and took over the whole lathe area.
He musta been some kinda super-learning hyper-intelligent alien or something!!!
After 20 years of having 50 different people in there helping this a-hole...
All the sudden... It's his own son that is the guy to figure it out!!
What a co-in-sigh-dence!!
Or - maybe the guy kept that knowledge and used it for his own benefit.
Making sure no one else knew enough to do much good.
There by elevating his perceived "worth" to the company... I'll let you decide.
My God I get side-tracked... Don't I??
Anyway - this pecker-wood got the job as the "Quality-Control" person for our factory.
And after working there for 20 years:
He didn't know the model numbers of the Ironworkers we make.
He didn't know the difference between any of the ironworkers we make.
He didn't understand how the Ironworkers we make even work.
The same with all the cold saws we make...
He didn't understand the manufacturing process - from inventory to shop orders to change requests, etc.
He didn't know how to run a computer - other than to surf the net...
He couldn't look up a blue print or one of our technical drawing to see if a part was made to spec. - let alone print one out!!
He couldn't figure out where the .pdf version of all our machines operators manuals were at
He didn't know what a .pdf was
He didn't know what Excel was
He didn't know what a spread sheet was
He didn't know how to access our inventory system to find part locations, Bill of Materials, where the parts were used, assemblies, etc.
He didn't even know what part locations, Bill of Materials, where the parts were used, assemblies, etc. meant or how they were used.
He didn't understand why one computer program just didn't do "everything"...
"Why do I have to use inventory to get a part number - and then have to go to this other program to see a drawing???"
And there is SO much more...
To be blunt - this guy is a f*cking idiot.
He could program a lathe - wait - he can't do that anymore either!!!
We bought all new lathes and they use a different program language!!
He got out of the lathe area just in time for that, didn't he??
Another miracle, I'm sure...
OK Jason - would you please stop bitching and make your point...
Fine - I will!!
After this bastard stood there and watched me stagger around with a broken back...
After I worked my ass off for him for 5 years and he wouldn't teach or tell me anything about programing a lathe...
This ass-hole even made it so I ended up being the "open up the shop in the morning" guy...
Causing me to get an hour less sleep every work night for over 10 years!!
And he gets his spiffy new "Quality Control" job and realizes he's screwed because he's so stupid...
Who do you think that rotten SOB went to for help??

My how the tide can turn!!
And all this idiot knows how to do is use people.
I have tremendous respect for the man who runs our company.
He's done a lot for me and I have a nice life because of it - because of him - because of his family.
So, instead of inviting the new QC guy out-side and telling him to go f*ck himself...
And being a little older and wiser - and wary!!
I decided I'll do my best to show zipper-dick how it works!!
All the while keeping in mind that you can't fix stupid...
So, after several months of trying to explain things to him and showing him how stuff works...
I started getting asked why some of my things were taking so long.
After these several month - one day Mr. New QC guy came and bugged me SEVEN times!! I started keeping track...
Obviously - he wasn't figuring on learning how to do stuff himself.
He was just going to keep on coming in and bothering me with it - because it's "easier" - He actually told me that!!
"They should hire a new guy to do your job and you can help me with this QC job!!" he said enthusiastically...
So, I had a little meeting with the head engineer.
And he immediately went out in the shop and told Mr. QC to leave me alone!!
But I did my part - I tried to help the guy!!!
It was his decision to not learn anything and think he was gonna keep using me forever.
So - my job is back to normal - and I love it.
And he's finding out that BS doesn't work for everything...
Anyway Husker - I AM sorry for being so "Self-Absorbed" that I can't compliment you without launching into a story about myself...
I'm sure a "gold certification from Caterpillar" is a pretty major accomplishment...
Caterpillar is no small company and I bet being a supplier or vendor for them brings you folks a lot of business!!
And I would think there is a lot of competition too...
Companies are always looking for the cheapest way to get something and have the same quality.
Fairly huge successful companies like Caterpillar benefit so many other people in other businesses in many states.
If we ever get this economy going again - and I think there's a good chance there'll be a change this January that'll help!
I hope we can get back to where we belong.
