I'm sure some of you will find this amusing...
Went out to the range to shoot some targets with my JHP yesterday. The last time I went out I didn't shoot so good, so I got up about 20 feet away from the target and used the hood of by suburban for a rest. Well, the gun shoots well (had a 9 shot 2-1/2 group on one target!!) so it's me that's the problem!! Nothing more practice won't fix... :D
Anyway... while I was there, I found this plastic round red thing. I thought it was the lid off a pop bottle. I picked it up and it had like a 1 inch square of adheasive on the back. So, I thought it might be an air freshener for a car or something like that.
So, I stuck it to a big 6x6 piece of wood that was there and went back to my suburban and jacked a round in the chamber. Took careful aim and slowly pulled the trigger and.....
Ka-BOOM!!! What the hell?? For a second, I thought my gun blew up!! Felt a shock wave even!! Scared me so bad I didn't even move for a bit. A big cloud of dust blew in my face as I figured out the little red thing blew up when I shot it. Splintered the hell out of that 6x6 too.
Have since found out you can buy exploding targets - Found that out the hard way!! Kind of dangerous to leave those things laying around!! Maybe even a little irresponsible....
I guess it makes for a good story to tell!!

At the Big Sandy shoot they had gallon jugs of Tannerite (or similar) on the line. It was cool watching those explode when the line went hot.

I can't even tell you how bad that scared me... :scared: I had NO idea they made such a thing!! I was shooting reloads and I thought I double charged one!! Plus I was so close to the damn thing. Must be what it's like to shoot a stick of dynamite!!
I can see how they could be a lot of fun!! I sure wouldn't want to be too close to a pound or two of that stuff - let alone a gallon jug of it!! :D

Shooting a stick of dynamite will cause you no excitement at all.

Just look around for an old, old stick in the barn somewhere -- the older the better.

move, look at or otherwise interfere with those sticks! :wow:

I was cleaning out an old mine shed about 15 or so years ago and found about a quarter or so stick sitting on the workbench -- probably used to set off prell. it had been in the heat for at least 5 years or more and had a bit of 'leakage'. I made some remark along the lines of 'hey, look at this' when the guy I was with grabbed it and threw it as far away as he could. It went off when it hit the rocks but not with the big bang you'd expect. Yeah -- I bitched at him about impulsive behavior. He was afraid it might go off so he picked it up and tossed it. People do dumb things.

Yes. Sportsmans Guide sells it but I don't see the little red ones. The reactive targets for pistol/.22 cal. come with little red containers with peel and stick squares for the back.

Last summer a couple of my students went together and bought about 30# of this stuff (yes, they are young and foolish). I was about 2 miles away when they set it off and still felt the shock wave. Later they showed me pictures of what was left of the tree they put it in. I hear it works well for filling in groundhog holes.

Did they pop the whole 30#s at once?

I buy Tannerite in 50 pound lots, but it's not a name brand thing. I buy the aluminum powder (300 to 600 mesh) from one place and the Ammonium Nitrate (34-0-0) from another. It's MUCH cheaper that way.... PLUS, you can blow off 35 pounds at once and have some serious fun!
