Post a pic of the top of the receiver and I will tell you. Its most likely a Type 38 or a Type 99 The type 38 is a 6.5mm and the 99 is a 7.7mm

Happy shooting Dave Gillespie - (Sharp Shooter), you will be missed and remembered.

We will miss you Jerry Roberts - (woodyubet), you will not be forgotten.

We are better off from having known you Dean Stephens -(ampersand) It wont be the same around here without you.

Gotta watch th type 38s, I had one that was re-chambered for 257 Roberts. I found out this was pretty common practice. Don properly it will be marked as such. Creates a wildcat 257x6.5 mm although you can fire the 257 but accuracy suffers because the bullet is slightly smaller.

so how do you tell which type an Arisaka is? I brought Dad's home to live with me for awhile, but I really don't know much about it sadly.

See the characters beneath the mum? Look at them with the rifle standing up, butt on the ground. The first two say "9 9" can't see the last one though.
A "3" would be three horizontal lines stacked on top of each other, and the number "8" would look like an inverted V.

ok thanks guys. i'll get some pics for you when I have a chance. it is a 7.7 so that would be a type 99, right?
it's really not a bad looking and shooting gun.

They made a few oddball offshoots like the Type 1 and Im not sure if any of them were 7.7 or not, its a 99.99% chance that it is a Type 99

The type 99 was considered by many to be the strongest action of any bolt action rifle used in WWII

Another tidbit, the japs had other weapons such as light machineguns that used 7.7 ammo, most of it will not interchange with any other weapon system because some systems used rimmed ammo, some was semi rimmed...... you get the idea.
