Picture added.
I left Wickenburg yesterday morning and headed up to Prescott. I got there about the time stores started opening and I went shopping. Not much of anything available -- I tried to talk myself into a Russian capture P38 but I've owned 'em before and don't care much for them. Asked about ammo and they had nothing I was looking for so I took a look at the M44s. Very nice condition and if I bought one I could have a spam can of silvertip for $90. What the heck -- I bought one. It's the only gun I've bought so far this year.

I tried - even stopped at the stores open in Kingman - but just couldn't find anything else to buy.

Took it shooting today and shot it with bayonet extended and folded. I think I like the 91/59 better but there's little difference in shooting them. Here it is with some safe-mates:

At least you got one. If I might ask, how much for the M44?

I think it was too much $239 and the only way to get a tin of 7.62x54r was to buy the rifle -- extra $90. Here's a link -- they all look pretty much alike. I picked this one based on trigger.

Yeah, I know -- I'll try to get some pictures in the next couple of days. Nothing special about this one Izhevsk 1944.

I'm not a big fan of the attached bayonet and like the M38 more. Unfortunately, the M38s that came in recently were all sold before I could order one. My 91/59 is almost a recreation of the M38 and I like it better than the M44. Anyway -- I bought it on ... you guessed it: impulse!

The Little Woman has a 91/59 which I think is a lot like a 38
I personally like the bayo on the 44

Buds has M38's but they're just under $300 now.

Wow, after hearing all these prices, I almost feel like a thief. Of the 5 I have ('38, '44, '91/59, and 2 91/30's ), all came clean, ready to shoot, and the most I paid for one was $99 for a 91/30 hex. But, it was several years back.

The dollar continues to slide in value so it requires more and more federal reserve notes to buy things.

I edited original post to show this picture:

You're looking at the M44 and the 91/59 with a Marlin 39 between 'em.

Ruger Redhawk .44 mag and a GSG 1911 .22lr on the tailgate. Today was just a relaxing day plinking. The consensus was that shooting with bayonet extended was a bit better balanced but not much different than shooting with it folded back. I think the 91/59 is preferable because it's a little lighter.

I would post a pic of the Hungarian M44 that I just put together from parts but this forum hates my pics, won't post them even when I resize them for some reason. Gonna shoot it for the first time this weekend, hopefully it's a decent shooter. Got a good bore and rifling so don't know why it wouldn't.

I enjoy project guns. A little over a year ago I picked up a No.4 Mk1* SMLE -- wood butchered but metal uncut -- cheap. I gave it to my son and got him busy putting it back in military shape. Sling swivels were the hardest parts to find. The project ended up costing just about the same as buying one in nice condition.

You posted a bit about putting the Mosins together from barreled receivers; that seems a worthy project to me but it would have to be done for the fun and not the savings.
