Wrong metals or wrong welder? I've seen some pretty dissimilar metals joined successfully if done right. Steel is steel and iron is iron and SS is SS. All can be joined to each other very well if done correctly. Now it's obvious aluminum does not fall into this class of welding but bronze does at least as a filler. Since I doubt you are using iron in either your bolt or your handle I'll guess that one was steel and the other was a form of steel. This requires the correct welder. You ain't gonna stick weld it (even with the right rod) and you'll be really lucky if you get it to stick with a wire welder (mig) but it can be done with the right wire and gas. The correct welder is the tig with or without a filler rod of something between the two in hardness (I don't remember the rod that we used). A tight fitting piece requires no filler. Although it can be gas welded using a filler rod also or brazed which wouldn't look as good. The handle needs a good fillet ground around the edge and it wouldn't hurt to drill a hole about 1/16" deep to accept the handle also (after the fillet is either ground in or machined in) which helps hold alignment as well as giving more material for penetration.

I don't weld myself, however, I have been a welders assistant for over twenty years in the field and have seen just about anything and everything joined together successfully. Cast iron is the hardest (easier to braze), SS is a close second followed by steel to stainless or vice-versa with carbon steels the easiest.

Soo, good luck with it. Keep it cold and don't warp it.

Well the instructor was thinking the new bolt metal wasn't 1018 CR as listed on the invoice. It just jumped to the tungsten and made a real mess. The young man welding it on for me is a certified welder so I'm glad he tried and not me. :thinkin:

Well I looked up 1018cr and see that it's a low C metal. I don't see why that makes a difference when welding. It's a general purpose steel. Unless the higher manganese content makes it weld poorly IDK. But that doesn't seem to be the case as per:

Couldn't you throw a spot of weld in there and try regrinding? The parting line should be really fine if visible at all.

Isn't that considered indecent exposure?
