Here are some slightly better pics of the wartime pistol What makes it unique to me is that the serial number is 3 digits with no prefix. I always thought they had a 4 digit number and could have or not have the prefix

Happy shooting Dave Gillespie - (Sharp Shooter), you will be missed and remembered.

We will miss you Jerry Roberts - (woodyubet), you will not be forgotten.

We are better off from having known you Dean Stephens -(ampersand) It wont be the same around here without you.

The first 999 guns that year would have only 1,2, or 3 digits. There's just fewer of them, so kinda rare.;)

Now, I don't know that they started at 1, or what, but you obviously have a gun made at the Oberndorf plant, early in 44.

What's neat to me is that my P 08 Luger was made at the same plant sometime in 1942. Only 2 years separate them

Very nice looking pistol Tom...... I dont have mine with me right now but the post war one was made in either 7 or 9 of 58. It was right near yours on the assembly line :) The stamps you are not sure what they are should be like waffen stamps to show that the pistol passed inspection at the factory???

Im trying to remember where I saw them at, but someone was selling the leather holsters like yours for 25 or 30 bucks each and my intention was to get a couple of them for my two.

Hey Greg! Did you end up getting the P38 that you were talking about over at the surplus rifle forum?

No, didn't get it. I gave the guy a fair review of the pistol based upon the info I had gleaned from a few different sources/people, but told him it wasn't something that would be filling a hole in my collection (I'm definitely more of a Finn collector, never really been hard core into the German stuff), so I would only be willing to pay $650 for it. He was cool with it - said he wanted to get more for it and was going to see about other takers. I'm sure he'll sell it without any problems.

For now, Ill just be content with my one and only P38: an August 1944 vintage Spreewerke example:

Image

I wanted a nice representative example of a wartime P38, so I got this one. Should be enough to keep me happy unless/until I run across a screaming deal for another "better" example. :)

I'll have to follow-up on those threads on the other forums... completely forgot about it once I knew I wasn't going to get it. Thanks for the reminder.

Cheers,

~ Greg ~
