I picked this up today:

1934 Tula hex

I don't know a lot about these so fill me in. Numbers seem to match on receiver, bolt, mag, and buttplate. Stock is obviously refinished. What's the deal with the front sight? Did it not get upgraded or does this sight mean something else?

Also, it has no bayonet or cleaning rod. If somebody wants to sell or trade for these let me know. I have posted a WTB in the sale section:

Thanks, it does look pretty good. Nice rifling and not counter-bored. I'm not sure what, if anything, should be done about or to this rifle.

I think it looks nice too. Thanks for the link -- I'll be reading. I will check online sources if nobody on forum can help me out.

That appears to be a 91/30 with an M91 front sight. Some were used up until around 1932, it's conceivable that someone just changed it because they liked the blade style better than the hooded one, or it could have been done during the refurb process. Since this one is in a wartime stock it's more than likely been refurbished through the Ukraine factory, but if someone refinished the stock they may have removed the little square with the diagonal hash mark that marks it as such. Pretty nice looking rifle overall!

The son and I went shooting today and we took all 3 Mosins. The rifle is between the M44 and the 91/59:
Image
The longer sight radius of the 91/30 is very noticeable and both of us like the older front sight. My son really thinks he shoots better with the rifle. We each shot all 3 a magazine full one after the others. We agreed the rifle has the worst trigger pull while the 91/59 has the best. The trigger is obviously pretty important to me because I shot best with the 91/59 and worst with the rifle. My son seems to be able to deal with the crappy trigger better than I because he shot better with the rifle.

The M44 was a pretty dull little carbine with the other 2 to shoot and if one them goes away it'll be the M44.

Take the trigger spring/bolt stop out and polish it here with a fine stone and oil, making sure to hit the outer edges. It usually takes about 3-4 pounds off the pull and smooths it out tremendously. Do not remove any metal off the sear itself, although you can smooth out any damage as long as you don't change the profile of the rear lip.

Nice rifle I just saw one of the Alaska shows where somebody was shooting a caribou with one. My Mosin still has sticky bolt syndrome.

I was told they won't stick if they are scrupulously clean. Both of the carbines work well and the guy I got the rifle from scrubbed it within an inch of its life so it doesn't stick either. My son is talking about what he's going to do to the stock to make it look more correct.

So - if anybody has advice on finish for the stock, please provide info.

Take the action out of the stock. remove the bolt. Take a brass shotgun brush (20 gauge I believe) and chuck it up in a cordless drill. Pour mineral spirits into the chamber while scrubbing it with the brass brush. A few minutes of this usually cures the worst case of sticky bolt ever seen. Also on an off chance check the edges of the lugs on the bolt head, I had one with slight burrs that would hang up a bit when opening the bolt but this isn't common. And don't shoot Brown Bear ammo, last I checked they were lacquer coated which makes the problem worse.

Looks like a Finnish front sight blade and stock to me. Does it have the "Suomen Armeija" (Finnish Army) property stamp on the left side of the receiver? An SA in a box like this:
