Kinda what I was wondering...that stock could be a weak Pine tar finish, maybe?

No SA on the barrel and the seller said he stripped the cosmoline off the stock and applied linseed oil. It's obviously the finish is very thin.

Son wants to refinish it in more traditional Mosin finish -- if you have links please post 'em.

The absence of the [SA] stamp on the barrel shank doesn't mean it wasn't a Finnish capture... they missed some when stamping them. Can you post more detailed pics of the markings on the barrel shank as well as a close up of the front sight to show more detail? That might help better identify it. Also, when you disassembled it did you find any thin metal shims in the stock under the receiver tang or in the cutout for the receiver lug?

As for the finish, depends what you're looking to do. A shellac finish would be appropriate for a Soviet rifle. I've never done a shellac finish myself. Seems like a pain in the butt compared to an oil finish.

Cheers,

Greg

That fellow is actually a fellow collector over on gunboards.com. His alias on the site is Caribou. Seems rather appropriate. :)

Here's one of the threads discussing his show recently:

Looked at the stock more carefully. Butt has the circle in circle with CCCP between the circles. It's pretty much half obliterated (or maybe it was lightly stamped?) Also a small circle with a '10' inside. No rectangle with a slash I have on other rifles showing refurb.

I suck at photography but when I get time I'll play with the camera and try to get better pictures.

My son used BLO on his Enfield restoration, so he'll probably just go with that -- he's more concerned with protection than being totally correct. After all, it's already been messed with.

On mine that have no finish left, I rub five or six coats of lemon oil into them then just buff several good coats of Johnson's Paste Wax over that. You get a nice "warm" feel not the nasty glaring polyurethane crap do many want to do.

I have done the shellac finish from scratch. I used shellac flakes old style. You can get the online. They are made from the nest of a beetle and the pods are in trees. The color of the flakes depends on the tree they where feeding on. Easy to work with if you screw it up you just take alcohol and wipe it down and start over. If I had to done it again I would use Bullseye shellac from Lowes and tint it with Iodine. Both are alcohol based. Remember alcohol dries fast so you got to keep moving while you apply it.

It's a lot of work and pretty expensive.
I won't do it again. I just go shoot the hell out of them.
