When I said a couple thousandths, I was referencing a good quality compensator or brake....

I would say that would be a good idea!! (-:

I know that Mo - This Hi-Point compensator is mostly for looks...
I'm sure it compensates some and disperses the muzzle blast.
And I'm not exactly sure what the point of having a compensator on this is anyway.
It's only a 45 ACP and the compensator just makes louder for the shooter.
Makes a few more bucks for Hi-Point I suppose!!! (-:

Anyway, here we have it chucked up in the hand-lathe, or non-CNC lathe...

Image

No tiny boring bars were to be found, so I put a 1/2" drill bit in it and - - "Chirp, Chirp, Chirp"
The hole isn't centered and the drill bit only hits one side of the hole.

So I put in a 5/8" drill bit and that cleaned the hole up.
So now we have a .650 diameter hole for a .452 diameter bullet to go through.
The bullet shouldn't hit anything on the way through now!!

I decided to face off the compensator and this should tell us something...

Image

Now theres a precision, quality made part!!
No wonder the bullet was touching it...

I finished facing it off and I put a nice chamfer on it and shined it up on the belt sander:

Image

And the hole in the end is a lot bigger!!

Image

Looking through the other end:

Image

I really don't care what size hole is in the end of this thing as long as the damn bullet can pass through!! (-:

Just for the hell of it, I put my angle finder on it and it's right on at 90°

Image

That was just to make me feel better - to prove I didn't have it crooked in the chuck.

Now we have this bright shiny finish on a part that's supposed to be blued, or at least have some kind of finish on it.
And I have just the thing!!

Image

The Black Permanent Marker!!! :thumb:

And here is the finished product after a couple coats of "blackening"...

Image

I'm sure the black will come off - but soon, it'll get coated with muzzle-blast residue over time or get a nice coat of rust on it.

Now, I am anxious to try it out!!
I WAS going to try it after work today - but I ended up going to visit my brother and sister in-law as it was her birthday today.

So I will give it a try as soon as I can!!

Do you think I should put the scope back on 1st?
or try it with the open sites on it?? :dunno:

So...I know nothing about compensators, or flash suppressors, or flash hiders ( apparently there's a difference). I went to the internet and read a lot on the subject. I stumbled upon a guy who shoots AR15s competitively and in a picture he has his three ARs. The one he shoots in competition has nothing on the end of the barrel. The conclusion I came to was you need more than one 4595. One set up with all the cool accessories for the zombie apocalypse, and one with just the scope for distance target shooting. There you have it...A reason for buying another gun.

You don't need any of the above on a rifle that you shoot primarily for accuracy. The brakes are more for recoil-muzzle rise-taming for rapid re-acquisition of your target. Flash hiders are intended to do just that, make it more difficult for an enemy to spot your position from the muzzle flash.

And this one has like 4 slits on each side where the muzzle blast can shoots out the sides.
I'll bet with the giant hole I put through it, there won't be too much of that happening!!

For no apparent reason... I'm contemplating a "fix" for it.
Make a washer type thing with a .460 hole in it that locates off the giant hole in it now.
That would make the compensator compensate.

Another thought I had was to weld a round 16ga. (.060 thick) plug over the end of it and just shoot a hole through it.
I'd use a FMJ bullet for that!!
Then make the hole just a little bit bigger if needed...
Fire-Formed Compensator Exit-Hole!!!

I see the compensator just getting blown off the end of the barrel... It just clamps on with a little bolt!!!

Enough of that non-sense....

Yesterday it was snowing when I was done with work.
Today is supposed to have a high of 19° which I can live with (like I have a choice...)
But:
We have company coming today after work - but I still might have time for a trip to the range.
I'll find out after work!!

I'm ready - mags are loaded and everything set out for a quick get-a-way!! (-:

Made it to 20 here, colder tomorrow. I'll have to spray my box so my load doesn't stick when it freezes.

Tolly, That does kinda sound dirty!!

Anyway - it was about 20° yesterday after work - and about a 20mph wind too... :( So I didn't go to the range. :(

Today they say 1-3" of snow and general crappiness all around. So - I'll probably go out Friday sometime since it's my day off.

I'm leaving the open sights on it - it it shoots good, I'll put the scope back on it.
I figure that's my excuse to go to the range twice!! :great:

in the meantime - I did find these 2 old threads:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15044

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15014

Sometimes, if you dig through through the trash around here, you can find some interesting stuff!! :yes2:

Your right Jason, that does sound kind of dirty. I don't know how I didn't catch it. Maybe because my mind isn't thinking that way since it's going down to single digits tonight. I get that it's only February, but old man winter has been toying with us this year. 10° then 40° then 5 then 50. Give me some steady temps already.
And... The new guy, Tom, is from Georgia. Just what us northerners need. Another member telling us about using sunscreen in January. That one guy from Arizona is always chiming in. He's is the worst. :funny:
