I saw the Kimber Raptor advertised in a magazine and was wondering if anybody has handled one. I don't own any Kimber products, but they have an incredible reputation. The question I have...The grips look like a cheese grater. Would Kimber make a gun uncomfortable to shoot just to look cool? Or maybe, like always, I'm way off base and the grips offer an outstanding purchase.

I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend. I think there are better options out there. It's a 1911, I prefer to spend less and make the changes I want with the money I saved.

Rock Island Armory make a decent 1911 for a lot less. I'd rather have a Remington. The Remington shoots nice and has decent sights. Grips can be changed easily if that's a concern.

I bought a Shooters Arms Commadore and changed the slide stop and safety to Remington parts and put on a set of Hogue palm swell grips and an arched main spring housing and I'm still under $500 and it shoots great and is more accurate than I am.

I've only shot one Kimber, one my son has.
I still have dreams about it

When I bought my Dan Wesson it was specifically due to some problem that Kimber was having for some time. They were having issues with consistency. Some were exceptional, some, Kimber just couldn’t seem to get right. I understand they have solved those problems but I know over on 1911forums.com, thre are still may that will NOT buy a Kimber and I didn’t want to chance it

I posted "I have up to $1200 to spend. Extra time saving will not help, this is my limit. What should I get?

85% all said any Dan Wesson. 5% said Colt, 5% said Remington, 2.5% said RIA, 2.5% said Springfield.

I bought the DW. All I can say is it is the ONLY gun I've EVER owned that I was not immediately compelled to do some trigger or other work to it.
I will add that the Turk 'Tisas' GI model I bought first for $350 NIB has been a great pistol. A touch of polishing and now a homegrown ramp and throat job
has REALLY made this pistol shine and I had fun doing it. The trigger is now a silky smooth 4.5# and it's totally reliable and accurate.
Between the two I have, I am very fulfilled in my 1911 desires. If interested, I'll provide details more details on both. Other than that,
it's just how much money and how much spit finish you want that will make the determining factor.

I don't own a 1911. Back before the typhoon hit the Philippines, you could get a Rock Island for a couple hundred bucks. While the factory was rebuilding, supply was scarce and the prices went up. The prices never did come all the way back down. (Kind of like 22 ammo). Shoulda woulda coulda. Still kicking myself, like not buying a Wasr double stack back when they could be had for $250. This might be the year I get a 1911...But not a Kimber. For me they're just fun to look at.

I have two nice Norinco 1911 pistols have 500 each in them and they are good quality guns. I'm not saying the Kimber is bad I'm just saying you are paying for a name with a good part of the purchase price.

I've shot one Kimber the model of which I don't remember. I wasn't impressed. It had a loose slide, it rattled as a result. Otherwise it went bang each time the trigger was pulled. Not something to decide from however. One inexperienced shooter shooting one mag is not a reliable test of quality. It was a purty bright shiny gun though.

The only thing that keeps me from owning a Kimber is the price. :dunno:

Go check here https://forums.1911forum.com/ on what they say. 1911s are about all they do. And there's YEARS of 1911 experience there... solid info.
MANY their have owned 5 or 6 Kimbers and say they will not own another. I have not shot one so I have to defer. And only have shot one would not be fair
representation of the brand. Kimbers "may" be fine now, I can't answer that, but there's enough complaints I've seen about them that I ruled them out when
I was looking for one high end 1911. I had up to $1500 to spend on one so I gave it long and serious thought and research.

End soapbox.

It's exactly the same concept as comparing Harley's with everything else. The name says it all. The same might be said about Jeeps and the other brands. There is a presumption of the chosen brand being better only because 'better' is in the eye of the owner. Snobbishness is snobbishness. Those that don't own the hyped brand do all they can to discredit it whereas those that do own the hyped brand would seldom, if ever, denigrate the brand they paid too much for. The Kimber I shot was sloppy, the slide was loose on the frame rocked sideways enough to rattle if you shook it. Is that true of every one of them? :dunno: but I seriously doubt it. This one might have had the snot abused out of it.

My son has a Kimber and a Rock Island, and he prefers shooting the Rock Island.
I told him if he doesn't like the Kimber, he could leave it with me

I was more curious about the freakish texturing on the Raptor. It looks like you'd have to wear a glove to shoot it. It reminds me of a rasp I have for filing Bondo. It's an advertising picture so it could be airbrushed so it catches your eye...And it did but not in a good way. It looks like it would draw blood after a few magazines.

I can't get totally on board with this. Calling others experience with a product, snobbery. "I want... a shrubbery!"

Kidding here, of course. But when I see owners reports that have had many of a brand and they say they all had problems,
I call that, evidence of a problem.

Now me, who has always had GoldWings and such (only ridden one Harley... like Jasons, and was impressed except for the cornering)
makes a blanket statement that all Harleys suck, your point would be 100% valid. If 75% of people that had owned Harleys said they would
not but another, that would be evidence of a problem. When and if they fix the issue, is another issue! ;)
