I dug out my old Ruger Single Six yesterday for the first time in probably 3 or 4 years.
It's a little rough looking, but the bore is still shiny, the action is butter smooth and the balance is perfect.
It's a 1975 vintage my dad bought new, and he "loaned" it to me in 1979 when I worked on a ranch south of town. (Did I ever tell you about my cowboy days?)
I carried this gun the entire time I worked there, and even after I moved to town to have kids, I still took it out once in a while to shoot, or just to look at.
Yesterday it shot very well, way better than it showed with me shooting it.
I still managed to put together a 3" group at 25 feet but that was 18 rounds and the last 6 were in about a 1 1/2 inch group.
Anyway, it's a cheap shooting way to feel like a gunslinger.

Very cool Husker!!
A gun that's been in the family for 40+ years is something to be proud of IMHO.

You should tell us a little about your "cowboy days" as we'd love to hear it!! (-:

I knew there was a reason why you're the good, honest, conservative gun owning gentleman that you are.

Love them Husk! I'd like a bit of a story on your cowboy days too!

E-paper?
I actually wrote a poem once about a real incident when I was working for Crazy Bob Lindgren.
(Remember, I claimed to be a cowboy, not a poet.)

Quote:
While riding one day on an old sleepy bay
I thought of a girl I once knew
I sang a sad song of a love that went wrong
And I started to feel kind of blue

As I plodded along, humming that song
And mourning a love unrequited
I blinked back my tears when that horse pricked his ears
That old nag seemed plum excited

From under my horse something furry burst forth
I just about greased my new saddle
That old horse just farted as the coyote departed
I mean he made tracks and skeedaddled!

I grinned like a dope as I grabbed up my rope
This was just the thing I required
To take my mind off love left behind
I began to feel quite inspired

I dug in a spur and it never occurred
That this idea might not be wise
But I’d already spread the tale in my head
And earned kudos from all of the guys

I felt better already, even a bit heady
As Old Bay and me closed the gap
I threw out a loop and let out a WHOOP
As that coyote stepped into my trap

When he ran out of line, (at least in my mind)
Ol’ Wile E should just close his eyes
But in retrospect, what would happen next
Should have come as no great surprise

When that rope went tight it musta been quite a sight
I never even had time to get scared
That mangy old thing climbed right up my string
And caught me quite unprepared

He clawed and he bit, he just wouldn’t quit
And I think I put up quite a scrap
I had a mouth full of fur from that miserable cur
It all happened right there in my lap

Well you might expect, that horse to object
To this drama played out on his back
Normally calm with unwavering aplomb
He developed a panic attack

He leaped in the air and I swallowed the hair
I’d chewed from that thick mangy hide
Old Bay did a spin then cut back again
That coyote never had such a ride

When the dust settled down we were all on the ground
Legs, arms and rope were all tangled
I couldn’t breathe, spit or cry, no matter how hard I’d try
And the front of my Levi’s were mangled

I lay gasping for breath, half hoping for death
As I watched that old prairie rat
He musta had quite a scare, and with a blank vacant stare
He walked over and peed on my hat

I vowed then and there, and I mean it, I swear,
I’ll not rope a coyote again
I’ll go back to spooning and mournfully crooning
About the girl whose love I’ll not win

Now that there is funny! Goodly written too! I'm not much of a poet and certainly know it so I'll leave it to those who are, but to my mind you are that kind and should continue on as a poet...

Technically this a lyric...you are a poet...

Definitely good Husk!!!

Now, for Randall...
"Goodly written too! I'm not much of a poet and certainly know it so I'll leave it to those who are, but to my mind you are that kind and should continue on as a poet."
I'm not much of a poet and certainly know it so I'll leave it to those who are, but to my mind you are that kind and should and'll go far, if only you can don't you know it.

Therel Fixed for the worse for ya! You got my un-creative juices flowing.
