Some more research on 80% lowers and how to do it. Seems that with a nominal investment in tooling and jigs this could pay for itself after 3-5 lower builds assuming no F-up's. Of course, then one is stuck with 3-5 lowers that could not legally be sold, given away, or transferred to others unless you get caught...

You can not build from an 80% WITH THE INTENT of selling it is what I see across various forums and that is the terminology used on the ATF site as well. Of having an 01FFL would mean that you are 'In the business" as they also state, so it'd be a lot easier for me to build one, then say a year or so down the road sell it than it would be for someone already under the ATF's thumb so to speak.

If anyone would be interested in going in "shares" on a jig setup, let me know...I can't see paying $70 for one that I'll only use once more than likely.

This makes sense. If a person is making and selling them routinely that transforms them into a manufacturer I guess.

Wish I could just for the experience of doing it. Unfortunately, I don't own a router, a mill, or a drill press. :groan: A good drill press is on the list of things I want though. Not that I need one, but when I could use one (rarely) it would be nice to own one I could trust.

I actually have no complaints at all about the cheapy 8" Harbor Freight one. I bought one way back in 2009 when I started making my sight tools, and used it as a mill which usually leads the shaft bearing to self destruct due to side-loading the bearing which it isn't intended for. But it kept on fine until I eventually saved up for the mini-mill and I still use it for chamfering and drilling some of the holes in the Gunsmith sights and other than belts I've never done a thing to it. I added a second one that I have set up solely for drilling the push bolt holes, just got tired of doing the setup and teardown all the time lol.

I am looking at HF drill presses. Just really can't justify one now, I don't have a real need for one most of the time. In the past couple of years I've bought so many tools that I haven't even used yet I don't think I need to do that anymore. :groan: :stupid: For example, I bought a hydraulic cable fitting crimper, for?! :dunno: also got a long barrel air hammer...owned it a long time and haven't used it yet. Of course that is a tool that when you need it, you need it. I got oxy/acet tanks to use my torch about two years ago, haven't used it more than three times since. :dunno:

I bought an oxy/acetylene torch setup back when I had my body shop, I think I used it once in like five years. Newer cars are like tin cans and a sawzall and cutoff tool zip right through the stuff.

Well, I had an unexpected check for an order of 100 sight tools arrive, so I guess I'll just go ahead and buy a jig and maybe another 80% lower...
