The guy I work with - Young, Single, Works 3 Jobs, Rich, Has A Mattress Full Of Money - our "special tooling" machinist guy...
Anyway, he wanted and AR but said he hates the 5.56/223 caliber.

He decided on a Rock River Arms in 204 Ruger LAR-15M.
Rock River makes some nice AR's....

Image

I ordered it last month and he was so excited about it that he kept nagging me all day at work...

When's it going to get here??? When's it going to get here??? When's it going to get here???

Rock River said up to 30 days before shipping and he knew that - so as a joke I kept telling him "2 weeks"

Well, after about 2-1/2 weeks, it finally showed up in a nice blue plastic case.
I looked at the invoice and I was surprised to see it was $98 cheaper that I figured it would be...
So I passed the savings along to him - I work with him plus he's a neighbor and a really great guy.

Then when he opened the case..

Rock River had a sale and included FIVE 30 round mags in addition to the metal one they supply...
That's like $50 worth of mags!!
I should opened it 1st and stole those things... (-:

Anyway - he was really happy!!
That's what I like to see - Happy Gun Owners. :great:
He took it home and mounted the scope and got it all ready to go.

He's working his 2nd job today (Friday) and really wants me to go with him when he shoots it for the 1st time.
We'll have to sight it in to start with and he keeps talking about wanting to go coyote hunting...
He's got a new FoxPro HammerJack caller he wants to try out:

That 204 Ruger is a caliber I've thought about a lot.
I'm thinking he's got a good coyote and prairie dog gun.
Probably pretty good out to 300 yards or so.

That little bullet starts out at a blazing speed - but slows down pretty quick!!
I believe it's basically a necked down 223 or 222 Mag cartridge.

What do you fellows think about the 204 Ruger?
Especially compared to the 223 in an AR platform.
Is the 204 a better cartridge to have?

I've never shot a .204, but I really don't know what advantage it would have over the .223 :dunno:
Why doesn't he like the 223/5.56?
Looking at Winchester's ballistics calculator, I can see the .204 shoots just a bit flatter and a little faster, but doesn't deliver the energy of a .223 because of the smaller projectile.
I bet it's great for prairie dogs though. :great:
Ammo seems to be about 2 1/2 - 3 times more expensive, but if you reload, that shouldn't be an issue.
I had a handful of .204 Rugers, my brother-in-law had them mixed in with .223 rounds...in magazines when I bought that Saiga .223 from him. every few rounds, the gun wouldn't fire, can't remember if it even went into battery, but I got to looking, and he had .223 and .204 mixed together.
Looks like a nice rifle, let us know how it shoots.

I likely would have stuck with the 5.56, being able to also utilize .223, both being plentiful and inexpensive, rather than the lighter (and IMHO less useful) more expensive .204.

We went to the range this morning to sight that baby in.
He used Hornady "Varmint" ammo.

He put a Vortex 6-20 power scope on it with Vortex mounts

I should took pictures...

I had some targets where I put those bright orange 1" round circles in the center.

We put the targets up at 100 yards.

After he got it sighted in he had 1 three shot group IN the 1" orange circle that I could cover with a dime...
That was the last 100 yard group he shot.

He had another three shot group just outside of the orange circle slightly larger than that - Like a nickel might cover it...
That was the 2nd to last 100 yard group he shot.

He shot at a "Shoot'N'See" target someone left up at the 200 yard stop... It looked like about a 3" three shot group!!!

Then he shot the 6" and 4" swinging steel targets we have at the 300 yard stop...
Out of the 5 shots he took, he hit the 6" one twice and the 4" once.

A freakin" factory rifle with freakin' factory ammo...

That's pretty damn good!!! :great:

He had a blast shooting it - big smile on his face!!
We might make another trip to the range today too.

And this fellow was raised on a farm/ranch...

Seems like those guys are always a heck of a lot better shot than I am!!

Its an accurate round, I have a customer that built one... but I cant say that it justifies the extra expense of ammo and everything in the long run. I would just stick to .223 but then I'm cheap :)

I kinda agree Walt - But since he's a reloader...

It looks like a guy can reload for a .204 about as cheap as a .223

The initial expense for the brass is higher for the .204 for sure.
As is the price of the gun or even the barrel if you put it together yourself.

And while it's fun to look at other calibers, I'll be sticking with my .223 as well.

Which reminds me - I should order some more bullets...
