Thinking cap, Randy! Heavier gun won't kick as hard as a lighter gun, all else being equal. :groan:

It is a 5.25 (if even that!!) pound gun. Narrow hard recoil pad.... :(
Also, I shot it 25 times in a row!! A whole box of shells...
When's the last time you shot a 5 lb. shotgun 25 times successively??
I Gay-Ran-Tee you - It'll leave a mark!!

My slip-on recoil pad is here today!! Can't wait to put it on and give it a try.
I might just wait until Thursday and try it at the trap shoot.
It should "fit" me a lot better as it was a little on the "Stubby" side for me.
My SIL is fairly rolling his eyes on this deal... (As are probably most of you!!)
But it's fun to try something like this. I know a "normal" person would just
go buy a used "grown up" shotgun... But I am still getting by pretty cheap...
I have an extra $19 invested with the slip on recoil pad. So I'm still less
than half of what a used pump gun would cost. And everything I've done
can be undone to return the Rossi back to it's original configuration.
Plus it's just plain fun to aggravate the SIL... :thumb:

Also, I'm not a big fan of "pump" guns or over-under guns. I'd like to get
a semi-auto someday when I grow up. I honestly just don't wanna spend
$500 or even $250 on a shotgun right now. It was a stretch to buy this
Rossi and 10 boxes of ammo!! Shotguns just don't tickle my pickle that
much. It's fun to go blast some clays - but not $500 fun!!

Cant wait to hear the results of the weight/spring/pad additions! My guess is that it'll liken it to a powder puff of a CANON!!! ;)

FAIL!!!
The ol' slip on recoil pad just didn't fit over the springs/foam-pad that I added on to the end of the stock like I hoped.
So I shit-canned that idea. Looked good in my mind, just didn't work out in the execution. :(

"It's better to have tried and failed, than to have never tried at all". (A misquote from Alfred Lord Tennyson...)

BUT, that Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad looks like it has some pretty good padding - I think it'll soften the recoil up
quite a bit itself. I added s few pounds of sand in that hollow stock as well. So, I'm going to give it a try with it the
way it is:
Image
I am hoping with the extra weight and the extra pad, that will be enough to make the recoil tolerable.
I'll find out Thursday night!! :D

Sorry Jason we do not allow pics of socked feet here. if you want to show feet they have to be nekked ;)

that pad should help a lot with felt recoil, along with the sand in the stock.

Jason nobody likes a tattletale ;)

I put a recoil pad similar to yours on my 50BMG. previously with just
the plastic ar stock it hurt to shoot after 3 or 4 rds now with the half inch of rubber padding I can shoot all day if I can afford to.

Shoot all day? Since I blast $100 in a half hour, that won't be happening.

I'll be happy if I can make it through a couple boxes of shells out at the trap shoot Thursday
without any more "marks" left on my shoulder!! I'm glad to hear a recoil pad helped with the
.50 BMG!! If it helped that gun to be more tolerable, it should make a 12 ga. easy to shoot!!

You can tell hobbles I'm sorry for being a tattletale... :(

Well, the trap shoot went really well!! That Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad and the extra weight did the trick.
I went through 50 rounds and no bruises or marks.
I did get to feel the difference with, and without the sand inside the hollow stock!! :D
How?? I'm glad you asked...
The 1st 25 rounds went without a hitch. Halfway through the 2nd 25 rounds, this happened:

Image

The plug came out of the bottom of the pistol grip!! I lost all my ballast!!
That sure got some looks from some people!! :hehlol:

I thought that might happen, so before I filled it with sand, I knocked the plug out and put some clear
Permatex around it. I thought that would hold, but it didn't...

Losing my ballast did help me to figure out that the extra weight was a big help with the recoil!!
It kicked significantly harder without the extra weight. Went from easy to shoot to darn-right
unpleasant to shoot!! Still way, way better with the recoil pad than without...

The wife and I are making a trip to the big city today, and I'm going to buy a bag of lead shot
and refill that hollow stock with lead. Then I'll clean the pistol grip plug and the hole up all nice,
and use some JB Weld to glue that bitch back in there, once and for all!!

At least I'm providing a little extra entertainment for the trap shooting crowd...

Bet it did draw some strange looks when the trap door dumped its payload!

At least you know for sure what solves the problem now!

Well, we made it back from our trip to the big city.
I waltzed into Cabela's and - $53 for a 25lb bag of lead shot??
I don't think so...
Guess I should have researched that a little better.
I have all the free sand I want!! So, I think I'll just refill with sand
and JB Weld the pistol grip plug back in.
And, I should be shooting happily ever after...
