Just took my brand spanking new 1.5 pound Rossi single shot 12 gauge to the trap shoot tonight. We shot 5 rounds at all 5 stations for a total of 25 rounds.
And all I can say - That f*cker kicks harder than anything I think I've ever shot!!!
Those last 5 shots were especially painful...

Image

OW!! :( You can see, everytime I shot it, it left a mark!! I tried to move it a little bit further toward my arm with every shot.
I shot the 25 rounds, and I was done for the evening!!
The recoil pad on that Rossi isn't very soft!!
I have a plan - a plan to help absorb some of that recoil!!
It does involve AutoCad and our Trumf Laser cutter we have at work.
If this recoil absorbing device works, I'll report back with pictures and commentary.
If not, I'll just hope everyone forgets about this post, like they did with my "weight-loss" post... (down 20 pounds, by the way)
I ain't paying $500 for no damn shotgun!! :hand:
I just hope my shoulder heals up by next week... Damn, my shoulder hurts!!

1200fps 1-1/8oz #9 shot skeet loads. Shooting it once or twice wasn't bad.
But with that hard, narrow recoil pad, 25 shots in a row was tough to take!!
Last week, we did 2 shots at each of the 5 stations, so 10 shots total and the next
round of shooters had a turn. They decided to go with 5 shots at each station this week
because our city was putting on the big 4th of July Fireworks display. Everyone
wanted to get a bunch of shooting in faster.

I was going to fill the hollow stock up with something heavy - like lead shot - to add
some weight. But I never got it done. I'm sure that would have helped some... :D

I was about ready to start shooting from the hip!!

Thanks Ex!! I might end up with a "slip on" recoil pads to cover what I've done, but we'll see...
Just for the hell of it, I'll show my flabby old-man arm and how my shoulder is healing:

Image

It sure turned into a big ugly bruise!! I sure never thought a shotgun could kick that hard - but it was 25 shots...

Anyway, I'll probably just embarrass myself by showing everyone how cheap I am here. But I do like mess with things and seeing if I can come up
with something on my own, instead of doing the smarter, easier, more intelligent thing - just but something.

To start with, I took off the recoil pad and made two metal "buttplates" out of some .060 (16 gauge) steel. They fit the end of the stock really well.
I hung that shotgun, barrel down, and filled the hollow plastic stock with sand. I wanted to fill it with lead shot, but I don't have any.

Image

The sand is pretty heavy and filled the stock up well. I then put a little clear permatex around the outside edge of the stock to help keep the sand sealed in there:

Image

I screwed on one of the steel buttplates I made on the end of the stock with a couple of springs we use at work.

Image

Fairly normal... Then I screwed the recoil pad on to the springs.
I put the other metal "buttplate" I made between the recoil pad and the springs:

Image

Wah-Lah!! Spring loaded, shoulder saving recoil pad!! Now the recoil pad tends to flex off to one side or the other.
So, I am going to try gluing a piece of foam between the stock and recoil pad to help keep it square, which I'm not quite done with.
The foam block:

Image

And the block rough fitted to the recoil absorbing contraption:

Image

The foam block helps a lot with keeping the recoil pad square with the end of the stock. I need to put a cover over it of some kind
and I was thinking one of those slip-on recoil pad would be the thing. I might be able to eliminate the foam block with the right
recoil pad. My total monetary investment so far - $0
The extra length of the stock makes the shotgun fit me better and the sand in the stock gives it a lot better balance.
I haven't tried it out yet - It could be a disaster!! This Thursday is the trap shoot again, and I'm not sure I'll be healed
up enough to shoot!! I'll go for moral support anyway... :D
I'll report back when I'm finished with it and actually shoot it to see if it works...
Anyway, a day in the life of a cheap bastard.

I would bet that the weight of the sand and the springs will make it so soft we'll have to tease you! ;)
(might start calling it a "girly guage"!)

Just kidding bud... but it should sure solve the problem!

Hopefully, you won't get pinched between the stock and the recoil pad!

That's why it needs a cover, I don't want my titty pinched by that thing!! As far as needing stiffer springs, these are a couple of "die springs" we use here at work
for some of the tooling we make for our machines. They should be perfect.
As far as this thing beating me up... have you looked at the picture?
I didn't know my skin could have so many pretty reds and purples and blues...
When I get this finished up, it'll be like a kiss from an angel, everytime I pull the trigger. :D
And, we can't forget, this is kind of a restoration of what little pride I have left with the trap shooters here...
You know what it's like to pull a Hi-Point out at the range...
Try pulling out a $150 Rossi at the local trap shooters club!!
Everybody else has their fancy, engraved over-under shotgun and here comes "Mr. FNG cheap shot trap shooter" with his Rossi!!
I think my shotgun was the only one there with an actual trigger I have to manually cock.
Knowing looks and rolling eyeball were everywhere!! :D And lot's of smiles after I did that 25 rounds!!
I got asked several times, "Hows your shoulder doing??" And not mean spirited at all - just people who knew that thing was going to beat the hell out of me.
I knew it would kick, but I sure wasn't expecting what I got!! That hard thin recoil pad - yeowch!! :)
So, when I get this bitch finished up and bust me some clays, the cheap bastard will be vindicated!! (somewhat...)

It doesn't matter what you shoot with, I use an old Sears Ted Williams pump with a 8 shot magazine extension. I have shot everything from Turkeys to clays with it. If it works for you show them how to do it.

:D Now THAT is what I'm talking about!! :great:
Just ordered a nice black Pachmayr Slip-On recoil pad this morning.
Once it gets here and I get it put on, that should be it!! :yes2:
I wish I'd a ordered it Monday - oh-well - it'll be here for next week.
Need to let my wounded shoulder heal up a little more anyway.

Image

I think it'll be a LOT more comfortable to shoot - I don't think the slip-on recoil pad alone would do it. I have an idea for a "Guide System" to keep the original (now) spring-loaded buttplate/recoil pad
from tipping from side to side. I should finish the thought - There's gotta be a jillion of these elcheapo shotguns out there!! I can't be the only one that doesn't like the vicious recoil this bitch has.
Kind of like, how many Hi-Points are there that need better sights... All of them!! :thumb:
I could make it a simple screw-on deal too - Take the screws out of the original recoil-pad and screw the new invention right back on with the same screws in the same place...
I'll have to kick (pardon the pun...) that idea around a bit.
Seems like there is always that thing you didn't think of... :hmmm:

Jason a friend just got this shotgun for a skeet league his FIL is on.

http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/america ... 37451.html

While he is a great shot with his old Winchester he wanted to keep up with the big bucks$$.
While a lot of people are happy with the Savage brand this one is terrible.

He refused the first 2 from a big dealer 1st one had a blemish on the receiver, second one a knot in the stock that was actually lose and would move. So he accepted the 3rd. I'm not sure what kind of game birds they have in Turkey but the laser etching on the receiver looks like a cross between a fat goose, an emu and a pheasant.

The checkering is pressed in not cut.
How do you you tell a good friend that gun looks terrible for the the money? You don't.

Granted it's not a really expensive shotgun but what he spent to him was a small fortune.

It's all about hitting what you shoot at not how pretty your weapon is. Ask anybody who buys HPs.

OUCH!, you must bruise easy? Even a 6 pound gun doesn't kick that hard.

I bought my brother a Revelation single shot 12g turkey gun when I was a teenager (paid ten or twenty dollars for it)(Stevens-Savage). That little six pound 40 something inch barrel would keep the pattern about 4" at 50 yards it seemed. :dunno: The first time I took it to an organized turkey shoot contest I won so many rounds they thought I was cheating. They took the gun and measured poked and prodded it, test shot themselves, found nothing wrong and finally asked me to leave so someone else could win some meat. I left with over 150lbs of frozen ham, turkey and streaks. It cost very little to enter each round of the competition too. I think I was something like 18 at the time. My brother still has the shotgun. It kicked like a mule. But I don't ever remember being bruised by it.
