I told you guys the other day about rescuing a filthy RIA 1911 from my LGS.
After a thorough cleaning, I took that big ol' beauty to the range today. She shoots like a dream. My first shot hit the bulls eye about 1/2 inch from dead center. I couldn't believe it and I'm not that good of a shot. The rest of my shots were just my average feeble attempts but more than adequate.

I can't believe I'd shunned 1911's all my life(my Dad hated them because the one he carried in WWII didn't handle the sand in the South Pacific very well). I'm a fan now and now I'll probably have to look for more of these guns. BTW, it's a Rock Island Armory 1911M A1FS.

Kinda ironic that your new pistol came from the same part of the world as where your dad had troubles with his.

the rock islands are the best 1911 you can get for under 500 bucks. made in the phillipines. i was doing t&e with a 4inch model on our two day excursion and as i noted in my range report i think they may have a problem with their recoil spring. ours got very weak after about 400 rounds. its coming back in december for a 'SECO Freezerburn' run where we'll subject it to our -15° weather and see how it holds up. just really good shooters i think.

i really hope you like that one. its very very clean looking. you did a good job scrubbing her up.

I think you made a good purchase. I like my 1911s. I have two RIA pistols - .45 and 10mm - and they are both great.

Damn...I never gave that a thought! He didn't see the Phillipines, he was at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Tarawa, Okinawa and others. A 36 month tour of hell, I suppose.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments on the cleaning job. FYI, I first washed the slide and the frame with Dawn dish liquid and a toothbrush to get rid of what looked like cigarette smoke residue.
Next, I took the homemade "Ed's Red" and 0000 steel wool to the slide and frame. Lots of elbow grease and 90 minutes or so yielded a great looking pistol.
I had the gunsmith at the range look it over today and he confirmed my suspicion that the gun hasn't been fired very much. The bore and the sear show no wear at all.
My LGS said the owner of the gun used to own a tavern. I suspect this gun laid on the back bar and never saw any use.

Great find. I've got a RIA 1911 FS Tactical model in 9mm. Best shooting pistol I've ever shot. Very accurate. I think RIA's are very under rated myself.
