Some friends and I went shooting today. After some close up work at 35 yards my buddy pulled out his .308 rifle and started shooting at a 10 inch steel gong at a paced off 235 yards.
I managed to walk a few rounds in on the target with my crappy old Chinese SKS. I was feeling pretty confident after that so I asked my buddy to spot for me while I tried to hit it with my 45 carbine using the cheapo BSA red dot sight that came with it.
Well it took me a whole magazine to figure out how high to hold at that distance but shooting from the prone position with a good sand bag rest under the forend I managed to get 3 hits on that gong out of the second magazine. No magnification, or any other help but the sand bag rest I actually rang the gong 3 times. Then I switched to some +p+ hollow points I usually reserve for my EDC pistol. The faster ammo reduced the amount of holdover required by a substantial amount and I managed 4 hits or of that magazine. So if you don't count the first magazine I used to get "the dope" I still scored 7 his out of 18 rounds at a whopping 235 yards on a 10 inch plate.
I'm sure there are some real operators or there that will snigger at my pride of accomplishment but considering this is the first time in 10 years I've even had the opportunity to engage a target at anything beyond 25 yards I'd say I done purty good.

Anybody else have some extremely long range success with their Hipoint carbine?
What's the max range you've been able to score hits at?
I think I was aiming at a point about 18 inches above the bullseye to hit the gong in its lower quadrants.

I voted "under 100 yds" but never tried longer. Too many guns and too little time to shoot them :P
I'd imagine that a 995 with +P hot-rod ammo like UnderWood or Buffalo Bore could do great at
extended ranges, and still do some damage to a soft target. Hence, this is not a wasted shot!

PS: My 995 was very accurate at the 50 yds I shot it, steel gong, maybe 16"x10" or so.
Iron sights and hard to see the target, it was shaded and I had blue shooting glasses.

Man - that's freakin' cool!! 235 yards with a 45 carbine and 500 with a 9mm??
That's way out there for a pistol cartridge!!

And the ballistic coefficient of a pistol bullet pretty much is the same as a barn-door - They slow down fast!!

And poking a hole in that jug - I wonder what the muzzle energy is at 500 yards with a 9mm?

I couldn't stand it so I looked it up on Hornady's ballistic calculator...

A 124gr 9mm bullet leaves the muzzle at 1110 fps with 339 ft-lbs of energy
At 500 yards, it's traveling at 687fps and has a 130 ft-lbs of energy - More than I thought!!
With a 100 yard zero - it drops 451.5 inches by 500 yards!! - 37.5 feet

And a carbine has a longer barrel - so it probably has a little faster start than 1110fps - That's what Hornady lists for their 124gr ammo.

The 45ACP Starts at 850fps with 369 ft-lbs of energy
At 250 yards it's traveling at 713fps and 260 ft-lbs of energy
At 500 yards it's traveling at 606fps and 187 ft-lbs of energy
With a 100 zero - it drops 104.9 inches by 250 yards and 639.8 inches at 500 yards - 53 feet!! :D

The +P+ ammo is 950fps with 461 ft-lbs of energy
At 250 yards it's traveling at 770fps and 311 ft-lbs of energy
At 500 yards it's traveling at 661fps and 223 ft-lbs of energy
With a 100 zero - it drops 85.9 inches by 250 yards and 530 inches at 500 yards - only 44 feet!!

The above was with Hornady's ammo 230r bullets - I'm sure a lighter bullet would do a little better.

Hornady's ballistic calculator is here:
http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resou ... calculator
Check it out - it's neat to play around with - Gives a guy a general idea what going on anyway...
Move the zero from a 100 yards back to 50, and see what happens with the bullet drop!! :D

I just have to get me a carbine - They sound like a lot of fun!!
Just so cool to think you fellas can hit something that far away with a pistol cartridge. :great:

That kinda thing is just fun - just to see if a guy can do it!!

Gotta go to work... :(

Koyote at 127 (measured) with a 995 TS. It was the gun at hand when the yote headed for the young goats. Three hits out of three shots. Two in the chest one in the left rear knee area.

Read Elmer Keith's book, "Hell, I Was There!"

He wrote about hitting a 2 foot by 3 foot target 900 yards across the canyon with his .45 LC revolver.

Just because it isn't practical or anything close to ideal doesn't mean it can't be done, shouldn't be attempted.
It was fun, first time since the mid nineties I had a chance to shout anything over 200 yards.
Sure is easier when you don't have to worry about rounds inciming.

Jerry makes the 1000 yd shot with a 9mm revolver!
Actually a seemingly pretty flat trajectory.
