Well, I broke out my smoke pole this afternoon. I haven't fired it for two years, the barrel was a lil dry. First shot hit high right, no problem, it got oil in the barrel. Next three shots were high and left, but it was a pattern. Three touching. Then I remembered I use the sights differently on a rifle then I do on a pistol. So after I got used to it, I seen I needed to go one click right. So I did and that gave me the fifth shot dead center. I'm ready.

Everybody should have a muzzle loader or 2....or 3
I've got 3 rifles, all .50 cal, one is an inline Knight and the others are sidelocks, more traditional.
Also have a .50 cal single shot pistol and a .44 C&B revolver
Lots of fun

I need to take mine out. I'd like to see where the first shot hits after the barrel has been cleaned, a patch with bore butter run through it then a clean patch, as that's pretty much how it gets shot if I actually get a chance at a deer, but they cut our alternative methods season here down to only 12/24 to 01/03

I always had the best accuracy with spit. But sucking on patches sucks so to speak so I use Crisco or saltfree lard. Never shot a conical out of mine though so YMMV. I've only shot patched round ball.

The modern BP guns should not even be considered muzzle loaders for the season. It's cheating the system big time. I hate cheating. No way a muzzle loader should be accurate over 100 yards. But with sabot'd modern FMJ hollowpoints that can be achieved with BP (or the modern equivalent) out of one of those with MV's at 1500 plus fps. It's cheating. It's legal, but still cheating.

Our first smoke pole season is the 15th and 16th of this month.
I use a 54 cal T/C.

Mine is one of the 'new-fangled" inlines, a Traditions "Canyon", basically a Buckstalker rebadged to be sold by Cabela's. It uses the 209 shotgun primers, I stick with cast R.E.A.L. 325gr bullets, I didn't care at all for the sabots as I needed to clean it between every shot to get anything approaching accuracy. I was told later that they have different thicknesses of the sabots and I probably needed a thinner one, but once I tried the cast bullets I saw no need to experiment with the .45 caliber bullets in sabots. Will it shoot a one-hole group at 100 yards? No way...but it's accurate enough to put that lead slug into the kill zone of a whitetail at that distance if I do my part.

For what it's worth,
I put a "Nose Touch" on mine and it improved my accuracy.

Image

I also had a lil movement in the barrel so I used a .015 feeler gauge to tighten it up, seems to have done the trick.

Image

I like a mixture of bore butter and goop (the soft one) as a patch lube. It helps keep the barrel clean er.
