mo, if I even had a good drill press I think I would just go with aluminum. Since you work with aluminum every day it should be no issue to cut. :dunno:

Getting difficult to find the 80% forged as well, plus have to have it cerakoted to boot.

If I have some extra cash soon I might get one or two just to have. If I decide I don't have the technology to cut them I know plenty of folks that do...

Guy I usually buy my lowers and uppers from messaged me yesterday and informed that prices are rising due to the election, that he has 50 sets of lowers and uppers for $140 a set and they will go fast. Told him I was thinking about buying a Bear Creek 80% as they have a sale on them right now for $60, so he offered me an anodized 80% stripped lower for $60 shipped...I need to delete and block that guy! Anyways, I have one on the way...

I can take measurements off one of my AR's, but have to be careful as the Harbor Freight mini-mill isn't the most accurate piece of equipment. I can't see buying an $80 jig to do just one lower.

I would think that since it is normally the fcg area that needs the milling out it would be simple enough to trace another lower and cut a steel jig yourself. Then the only other dimension would be depth. Of course there is the trigger slot and mounting holes but that should also be fairly easy...the hard part would be clamping it absolutely square with the tooling. :dunno:

I have an attachment that is used to square the mill head to the deck, I can use that and run it from one end to the other to check squareness of the part to the head.

Also the trigger pin holes and safety selector holes. Lower arrived today, that was quick but then he's only a tad over 100 miles from me lol.

I've been at work driving since 7 this morning, still have a few hours to go. In my absence it seems some of my parts arrived early. :thumb: The gas system. The big is still in Phoenix or is on it's way here, :thinkin: :dunno:

Gas block, tube, and 'enhanced mag release button' are here.

About 'enhanced mag release button'...it was used as filler just to save a few bucks with shipping. In itself, it's a huge disappointment. It's plastic (shoulda understood that from the price) and it's no different in size than a regular button. The only difference "enhanced' makes is that lines are easier to make since they are straight and the hole is blind instead of drilled thru. My rating--- :puke:
I'll save it for a polymer lower if that day ever comes or it's free to the highest bidder, your choice...

Now for the pertinence of these perky questions,

The gas block is made nice but I don't feel the barrel was machined quite right. Visually sighting the gas hole to the gas block from the side leaves a 1/16" or less gap to the shoulder on the barrel. :dunno: Prolly why the barrel was so inexpensive. So, to put the cart before the horse should I; A) drill out the barrel to the same size hole as the gas block and push the block up tight to the shoulder, 2) buy a machine washer (if possible) to fill the space, C) leave it be and place the gas block aligned over the hole with or without drilling the hole oversized?

Other perky (pesky?) questions...
I watched the Midway vid on how they used their own plastic alignment pins to align the block. Good idea, better marketing. I'll make my own pins thank you. Now tell me my idea has merit. Cut a small tree twig of appropriate diameter, cut a small notch in the center around it by rolling under a sharp blade, then align it and remove the pin the same way he did. :dunno:

Aligning the gas tube with barrel nut seems simple enough so why is/are there at least six expensive ways to do it? What would be wrong with a piece of hard copper tubing? The tube is roughly 5/64". A 5/64" drill bit? Even a 1/8" drill bit with some heat shrink tubing on it? I guess I could spring for the wheeler upper vice block with gas tube alignment device for about $23... At least the vise might come in handy if I decide to continue building these (assuming they don't get outlawed) ... The BEV block I got only has so much versatility.

I install the gas tube in the block and just use it to line up the barrel nut. It's tight enough tolerance to the hole in the upper receiver that if everything isn't lined up you'll play heck getting it through. I wiggle the gas block left and right to get a feel where center is, then I take the bolt out of the BCG and slide the bolt-less BC into the upper and check to see if there's any rubbing of the gas tube in the key. Never had any but it's a check that makes me feel better that everything is lined up.

I think most of those kits are just products after your money.

Hmmm....I believe my present opinion of the AR platform in general is about the same. Much to-do over nothing really. However, it does get addicting and I haven't even fired it. I guess I just like spending money...

case in point...I just ordered one Pmag, one asc mag, and a Anderson charging handle by mistake. I immediately noticed my flub and went to cancel the order. Hahaha, foolish me, this company doesn't cancel orders...ever. Get the parts and send them back, isn't that customer friendly? Of course, return postage is MY money. :groan: OH well, it's not like I can't use them. I really only didn't want the Pmag and charging handle and I wanted three ASC mags instead, I had changed that but I had two of the same page open and clicked buy on the wrong page. :stupid: It's a Jeep thing...If I have to explain you wouldn't understand....

Might as well put them in the "next AR" parts box. Yeah, I started out ONLY building one, too... :dunno:

Get it now, mostly just the lowers I think but affordable BCG's (least expensive ones) are disappearing too. :dunno: Maybe I'm just checking in between shipments.

My BCG came in today, I still need a charging handle. Going to pick up a cheap one at the local gun store tomorrow, maybe see what else he has that I need and set up a time for him to check my head space. Gonna get a standard barrel nut until I can afford another hand guard. :groan:

Picked up my charging handle today and half racked the gun. I haven't oiled or greased anything yet because I wanted to test fit everything before tightening/torquing everything down.

Talked to the local gun store when I picked the charging handle up and he does not test for head-spacing himself but gave me the card of a guy that used to work for the gun shop Gunsmoke guns that was featured on the TV show American guns that originated in Colorado... Supposed to be a top shelf gunsmith, not that I need those high end services.
