I cleaned my little JA-25 this weekend - and my "target shootin" AR too.

Decided the next time I go to the range, I'm taking my favorite weapon - my 45 JHP.
I took it apart to clean it and discovered that I MAY have waited too long to clean it...

What do you think??

This is pretty bad... I feel guilty for letting it go for so long... :( My Beloved JHP - How could I??
The fact that it still functioned and fired is kind of a testament that maybe Hi-Points are a little better than people give them credit for...

I think I know what happened too... How I let it get this bad.
And it's my fault.
I have run close to a 1,000 rounds through it since I cleaned it last.

Not only that - But I discovered a couple other somewhat abusive things that happened to it...

I'll explain WTF happened in the next post - Gotta go!!! :D

Problem as I see it. Carbon collects everywhere, even in the grease. Carbon... hardest thing known to man.

My c9 has more than 8K rounds through it and doesn't show near tht much wear. Hopefully, a good douche and some fresh
lube and it'll be ok. If not, it's off to Mom. But I've seen HPs with more wear than that, that still functioned ok.

I clean Hi Points with a can of penetrating oil like WD-40. I take it outside and spray it over the trash can until the crap running out is no longer black. Then I wipe it down, run a patch with Ballistol on it down the barrel, and oil it.

Haven't take one apart in many years.

Well, I'm pretty sure this looks this bad, or maybe worse than it is, because of the powder I use.
700X is the dirtiest damn powder I think I've ever seen!!
I bought it when pistol powder was nowhere to be found...
And yet I found this 8 pound jug of 700X for $126
It works good - but when I use this up, I think I'll be trying something else...

A person who's opinion I hold in high regard says I should try some Longshot powder...
I'm glad powder is starting to become more available!!
I did a quick search and found a 8 pound jug of Longshot - They want $215 for it!!
That's at least $50 over the MSRP... Gouging is still alive and well!!
But, when I'm a few bucks ahead - I'm going to get me some!! :great:

I'm pretty darn sure this is what happened:
I took my beloved JHP to the range and ran around 400 rounds through it, and brought it home, figuring I'd clean it "Later"...

Then, I decided to go the range again later. Realizing I didn't clean it, I pulled the slide back and put a little more oil in there...
That should do it for now!!

Went to the range and put another 400 or so rounds through it and came home, figuring I'd clean it "Later"...

A short time later - the "in-town" SIL decided he wanted to try shooting at my "spinny target contraption" and on fairly short notice...

So, I pulled the slide back and put a little more oil in there...

Ran another 200 rounds or so through it and came home, figuring I'd clean it "Later"...
Procrastination without limits...

The other two abusive things that happened to my poor beloved JHP....
Image
The hole or round "cavity" that the firing pin fits in...
Somehow or another the opening of it got whacked or bumped on something...
It even knocked a piece of my spiffy black finish off right next to it.
It made a burr or a "bump" at the opening where the parts hung up...
I couldn't get the slide retainer to come out!!

Not exactly sure how the hell this happened... :dunno:

So I spent some time gently filing - being careful not to get too carried away - that burr in the opening of that hole.
Finally, I got the Slide Retainer and springs and firing pin to come out!!
Whew!!!

I set them on a paper towel on the table - Geez they're dirty!!
Wait a minute...
Image
I do believe that firing pin is bent!!
Makes me wonder what they're made from - They seem a little soft to me.

I think this is the 2nd time this firing pin has come out bent.
Makes me wonder what the heck causes it??
It still fires - But I've noticed I've had a lot more rounds I had to run through a 2nd time.
Because they didn't fire on the 1st try.

Before I took it apart, I dry fired it a several of times.
It sounded like the firing pin spring was getting weak.
Pull the trigger and it was a pretty pathetic sounding dry fire!!

But as freakin' dirty as it is, and the slightly bent firing pin...
Well, that may be what was slowing things down!!

Maybe they make them that way for a reason... Maybe something harder would break.
I am about half tempted to make one out of some tool steel and see what happens. :D

In the meantime, I think well get a hammer and see if we can give this firing pin a little tap or two...
And have us a straight firing pin again!!

And I need to get my beloved JHP cleaned up...
So I can get it all dirty again.

Clean it, dirty it, clean it, dirty it... It's just the way of things. Call mom and you'll have a firing pin in a couple days.

Hodgdon doesn't have any data for Longshot in .25 acp.
:dunno:

Ex - I know it's good stuff - but I have about 4 more pounds of 700X to use up!!
Actually, I'd like to start acquiring some Longshot before too long here.
I'd like to just buy an 8 pound jug - or two - cheaper and don't have to worry about running out for a very long time... :great:
I feel bad betraying my IMR roots... Yes I know Hodgodon owns IMR now....

Amp - I thought about the 25 ACP - Longshot Dilemma...
I just need to look into it a little further. I'm sure there is a recipe out there...
Makes me wonder if you can even get enough powder in a 25 ACP cartridge to hurt anything anyway... :dunno:
A guy could tamp a little C-7 in there and try that - but you go first!! :doublegun2:

Well, I cleaned my beloved JHP and I think we may have discovered some more bad new. :(

1st, I'll show you a picture of a couple of paper-towls I put in the bottom of a box.
I hold my gun parts above it when I'm spraying or brushing parts off.
Image
It's kinda hard to see, but all those shiny specks are metal flakes...

Next is the pistol frame - the part right above the grips:
Image
If you look close - there's about a 1/2 dozen places where there is metal imbedded in the plastic...
And it seems to me more "Roughed up" or wore more than it was before too.

This is where the gun barrel meets the frame and where the slide hits it.
Is this acceptable?? Or is is getting a little too beat up??
I think it's still OK myself...
Image

And I think this is the worst part:...
Image

This is zoomed in closer.
Image
In the center "groove" is where the firing pin and springs go.
You can see there is a piece of metal peeling off...

And a little further down - towards the bottom of the above picture...
On either side of the shiny part in the middle -you can see the metal looking like it's about to peel or something... :)

Not looking good here...

So is this a "Don't shoot it anymore and send it back to ma to get it fixed" thing??

or a "What the hell - pull that loose metal shit out of there and go to the range and blast away" things...

Gotta feeling I'll be contacting ma.

I have straightened out HP firing pins before, they will last a while longer before they bend again....

I say clean it, take the piece of metal out of the firing pin channel put it back together and see how it shoots, its already at the point where they are going to replace the slide and barrel block anyhow me thinks.

Walt - Now that I think about it... I straightened the firing pin the last time I cleaned it. :thinkin:
So I just straightened it out again and we're good to go. :D

And, I did what you said!! I removed all the metal that was peeling off in there.
I wonder if the slide is any lighter now??? :D
Image
That's all the metal I removed from the slide...

I put the firing pin in the slide to check it when I was done removing the metal, and there was a place where it was a little rough.
So I polished it in that spot with this:
Image
That's a piece of a red Scotch-Bright pad that I wrapped around a drill bit.
I just polished the rough spot a little bit - and the firing pin slid free and easy in it's channel.

The next thing that was kind of pissing me off was how weak the firing pin spring seemed to be.
I was starting to get quite a few rounds that didn't fire.
I'd run them through again and they'd fire.
Even after it was all clean and lubed and everything... I still had a really anemic sounding firing pin...

So, I had this:
Image
A nice spring assortment I found in the big city a while back...

My beloved JHP has a long smaller spring the goes inside a short larger spring.
They both go behind the firing pin.

So, I replaced the short spring with this:
Image
A longer spring and a bit stiffer too...
Will it work? Will it be too long??

Well, it went together OK.
It was a little tougher to rack the slide.
But when I dry-fired it... That firing pin sounded like it had some balls!!
It had a sound that had little more "authority" to it.

The other thing I did - which probably wasn't a good idea - was slicked everything up with graphite.
With the dirty gunpowder I'm using, it really sticks in the oil and funks things up - So I gave graphite a try.

I took it to the range (Range Report will Ensue) and ran 302 rounds through it.
Every single round fired - I was blaming my Load-Master for not seating the primers consistently...

I put in the last mag for the day and thought to myself, "Not one single jam today!!" :D
The 2nd to last round jammed!!
Well - it went a full 300 rounds and worked flawlessly!! I'm happy with that!! :great:

I brought it back home and took it apart.
It was about as dirty as you'd expect:
Image

Image
The grey on the above picture is the graphite. Still slick on the plastic!!

It didn't take too long to get it all cleaned up again!! :D

The graphite didn't do real well on the steel, but it did really good the polymer or plastic.
When I put it back together this time, I put some graphite on the plastic again.

But on the slide...
I decided I was done ef-ing around with wusy girlie-man oil.
I used High Temperature/Extreme Pressure grease this time!!
Image
When I put it back together - It felt so much smoother!!

I haven't shot it yet with the grease job and I have about 400 loaded rounds left.
I'll shoot them up and see how the grease job works.

Then I suppose I'll have to reload the 2,500 pieces of 45 ACP brass i have!!

Keep your original springs. If/when you send it back to mom, put the factory springs back in first. ;)

Pretty cool. But why mess around? You have a lot of rounds through it and things are starting to come apart. Send that puppy back and let them re-furb it for you!
BTW why does everyone call them MOM ?
