Post subject:  1st Range Time with new JHP .45...some good some bad...

So I have some good news and some bad news. :)

The good news is that the gun is very accurate and a soft shooter. I really liked shooting it and it hit exactly where it was pointed....

when a round actually made it into the chamber....

The bad? The magazine that came with it is totally garbage. It hangs up every couple of rounds and I had multiple FTF per mags. I got through about 100 rounds and pretty much gave up on it and shot my other guns the rest of the time. Very disappointing so I shot an email to HiPoint and hopefully they will fix me up. I feel like if the mag worked reliably this could be a great gun. Right now though it is just a $170 paper weight. We'll see what happens from here - I am hopeful that they will fix it for me.

The magazine has long been the weak point in Hi Points. I always tore mine down and used some emery cloth wrapped around a pencil to get rid of the burrs on the underside of the ears, then bent them until they were at these specs for both .40 and .45. I have also encountered a mag spring installed backwards with the upper loop to the rear instead of the front. I had hoped they had finally started paying more attention to the mags, but evidently not.

I did open it up and de-burr it and polish it a little. It definitely hangs up in the middle of the mag, like the mag is very slightly bent or something. Honestly though I think they could use a little stiffer spring in the mag and it would help with a lot of these kinds of issues. The spring is pretty limp IMO.

HP will make it good! They have always been the leader of good warranties in the country!
I can't say that I've ever emailed them... I would rather call them on Monday and talk to a live person.
Always had better results that way. Keep us posted Dude!!!

I've also had better luck with phone calls (which I hate to make due to my hearing loss) than emails.

Tannie already emailed me back. I will call on Monday also just to follow up. In the meantime I cracked a cold one, got out the tools and supplies and polished the feed ramp, polished the trigger assembly, cleaned out and polished the slide retainer channel and polished the retainer and polished the mating surfaces inside of the slide just for good measure. Oh, and I installed some new grips :)

It eats everything I've fed it from WWB to Tula but I reload so that's it's main diet. I put 50 rounds through it today.

Well it's going back to Hi-Point. Kind of a bummer but not much else I can do at this point.

So let's see
$160 for the gun
$ 10 shipping
$ 20 FFL transfer
$ 20 shipping back to Hi-Point
----------------------------------
$210 total. Still not bad for an inexpensive gun - if it ends up working reliably. Oh well, let's see what happens. I still like this forum :)

We like that you like it here! Not for everyone, but then some don't like good folks that are friendly, not condescending, and actually helpful at any chance! ;)

Go figure. Course, we got Obama twice! :dunno:
