Anybody find a way to stop your hands from shaking when your firing a pistol? I seem to be getting worse. There's got to be something I can do, if I'm this bad now, what am I going to be like when I get old.

Wife just said she thinks it's pretty good shooting. I told her it would be if I was shooting free hand, but I'm not. I am sitting down and have my hands resting on the bar. I can see my hands shaking as I am aiming. Then she reminds me that I have a steel rod in my arm and a metal plate holding my wrist together. I say "I know, that means it should be like a vice, should be steady" Then she ALMOST used the "O" word. (i'm not old) Image

We just have to stay young at heart and remember when we "could" shoot well. Did I just say that? ;)

If your hands don't go numb or tingle I think you are doing great. You really wouldn't be happy with numb and tingling hands...

Sorry to hear about the problem, hobbles. Something I've not experienced first hand yet. The word from my friends similarly afflicted is to shoot closer targets. Not much help there. I suppose you already push with your strong or grip hand and pull with your off hand? If not, give it a try.

Well hobbles…

The way I figure it, I may be able to hold steadier than you…but if you can still SEE what you're shooting at, you're doin' better than I am... :funny:

Hobbles, please don't think I'm trying to be a smart a$$ (I
'm about your age), but the only help I can offer is don't age!
Nothing I've tried helps or makes any improvement. I have begun using a 10 lb. dumbbell to tone and increase the strength in my biceps and triceps. I'll let you know if that makes any difference in the future (so far, after 60 days, I don't notice any change, but I am stronger and can see more definition to my upper arms). I, also use a squeeze ball to improve grip strength.
Hang in there and remember that getting older beats the hell out of the alternative.

Some days I shake, some days I don't.
After my surgery last year, I have good days and bad days.
Some days I feel young and strong, and I shoot well on those days.
If I'm on one of my "I feel 80" days, everything hurts, I feel weak and my shooting gets worse.
I thought you were shooting pretty good :great:

As a long time old guy and a competition shooter back in the day let me clue you guys in on a few things.

First, get off the caffeine. It is hidden in lots of things you eat besides coffee. It is in sodas, laities, chocolate, energy drinks and sports drinks. Getting off caffeine will take care of most shaking problems. You will not find too many professional shooters that use caffeine products.

Second, look at the medications you might be taking. Sinus meds have ephedrine or loratadine, which makes you shake, anti anxiety meds make you shake, anti depressants make you shake, blood pressure meds make you shake. It's written right there on the side of the bottle!

Third, pistols are defense tools. If your target is so far away that a slight tremble means a clear miss your concept of pistol use might need revision. The sport shooting gamester group has changed the concept of defensive pistol use in the past 50 years, and not for the better. 99% of real life defensive shooting is inside 3 meters and 99% of our practice is at well past 3 meters!

Forth, if it is age you need to age gracefully. Use the rest, that only makes sense and you should be using a rest if it is available even if you do not shake! It is part of that "taking advantage of available cover" thing.

And as you get older your appreciation of fine shotguns increases, for good reason. if you come up with a shotgun you can make the other guy shake!
