I like to go for late night walks in the public land near my home. So the other night I was walking along wearing my super bright high beam head lamp, don't want to step n a rattler ya know. All of a sudden I saw 3 coyotes ahead of me, they all froze in the bright light, so I put my ear plugs in real quick, and they were still standing looking at me, so I thought what the heck and decided to take a pot shot at one with my 2.5" S&W M66 with full throttle H110 loads, 158 gr. Gold Dots. He was standing facing almost straight at me and slightly up hill of me, and to my surprise I hit him square in the brisket / chest. When I walked off the distance, he was 53 steps away, which is simply amazing for me since my vision is horrible / blurry beyond about 20 yards, which is why I attest to it being nothing more than pure unadulterated luck, but still kind of cool none the less.

What was also interesting is that the bullet exited right next to his tail leaving a slightly larger than golf ball sized exit hole. Tell ya one thing, I sure like the way those Gold Dots shoot and the penetration, simply impressive performance.

My son shot a mule deer a few year back. It was a spur of the moment thing, so he grabbed my 2.5" snubby with full tilt H110 loads, and I think it was a 125 gr. xtp, but might have been the 158 Gold Dot. Anyway, he shot it from about 150 yds. or so, lucky shot for sure. The bullet entered between the eye's and exited out the back of his skull, now that's some penetration, IMO.

It appears that the.357' mag. is certainly capable of much more than some might think. Every time something like this happens I'm reminded of the shear lethal performance the .357 mag can offer with the right load, which only increases my confidence in this cartridge as a self defense side arm.

When I go for my walks I never remember to bring hearing protection. Probably why I say "huh?" so much. Coyote that don't run off at the first sight of human types? Might have been sizing up dinner. While I've not heard of someone being eaten by coyote, I still make sure I'm carrying when I hear them yipping in the woods across the road.

Darn good to see you on GS! You've been gone so long I was getting worried about you!

Nice shooting for sure, I've always liked a 357 for almost anything.
