Hey there fellers - I'm kinda on the fence about something...
My local gun club is having a "Shooting Competition" next weekend (Sunday) over our
big and excitement filled "Scottie Philip Days" celebration out town has every year.
Scottie Philip is the man who saved the buffalo and that why my hometown is called "Philip"... And Only ONE "L" damn it!!
I ain't making' this up this "Saved the Buffalo" stuff,
They would very likely be extinct if not for Scottie Philip:https://www.amazon.com/Scotty-Philip-ma ... kgo-osx-20https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_%22Scotty%22_Philiphttp://www.philipsouthdakota.com
That last one is our town website....
"Philip, South Dakota - Where the Sun Kisses You Ass"...
So, when you have that next Buffalo Burger or Buffalo Steak,
you'll have to remember Scottie Philip.
I had a neighbor that worked for a ranch that raised Buffalo.
And part of his payment was meat... Buffalo Meat!!
He couldn't eat it all and gave us a bunch.
And It's really good - I like it better than beef!!
It sure is a lot leaner and just tastes better to me.
All Right - enough of the Buffalo Stuff!!This Shooting Competition is going to consist of:1.
ONE round of Trap Shooting - which is 25 shots - worth one point each.
I have a Black, Synthetic Stock semi-auto Charles Daly
12 gauge shotgun I need to go shoot and get familiar with.
I haven't shot it yet!! Gotta be better than my single shot...2.
25 Pistol Targets and a 2 minute time limit to hit all targets
And for that - we have my beloved 45 ACP Hi-Point JHP Pistol!!
Man, I'd love to beat the hell out of everyone with my Hi-Point!!3.
"KYL target at 300 yards from bench - aim to hit all 5 plates of KYL target in consecutive order -
max of 10 shots - 5 minute time limit - 5 points per plate hit - 25 point max -
plates must be hit consecutively to add up (No rifle sleds or vices - 3200 fps velocity limit - nothing larger than 30 cal.)"
Now I think a KYL Target means "Know Your Limits" and the targets get smaller in size.
My conundrum is two-fold...First
- The thing is next weekend!!
I thought it was TWO weeks from now - WRONG
Should I even bother with it??
It's a $50 entry fee with $40 going for prize money.
And I need to load ammo (pistol & rifle) AND get stuff sighted in.
I should get my Hi-Point on a rest and make super-sure where it's hitting.
Wish I had a David Mahan t-shirt to wear during the shoot... Second
- Which Rifle??
I have an AR-15 with a 24" Target barrel and a Timney trigger and a 24 power NC Star Scope
I have a Remington 788 with a stock, but pretty nice trigger and a 24 power Simmons Scope - an old silhouette Scope, I believe.
So - which rifle - which bullet - which load should I use??
I'm leaning toward the 308...
I have a new box of 155gr Hornady A-Max bullets.
And an old, but unopened box of Sierra 168gr HPBT MatchKing bullets.
The Sierra Bullets have a $16 price tag - they're about double that now!!
Anyway - I've shot the MatchKings many times, and my 308 likes them.
Ain't never shot no A-Max bullets before... Ever!!
So - maybe I should load up about 10 of each and see it one is better than the other...
And still have to sight it in for 300 yards.
The AR-15 would probably be OK too...
I have a 1,000 Hornady 55gr Spire Points I got from Manmouth Reloading.
And, I have a Box of 75gr Hornady A-Max bullets.
I've never shot either out of my AR...
Those 75 Grain bullets would probably be a "one-at a- time" thing,
Unless I can come up with a load where they'll fit and feed from the mag.
The 75gr bullets would also buck the wind better.
And the same thing with the 308...
Should load some of both and see which work
and then have to sight my AR in for 300 yards....
So - I don't know - Part of me wants to just say screw it... I waited too long to get prepared and not spend $50 as well.
Then theres the other part that wants to give this a try!!
I need to just decide on which rifle and which bullet - and just use that one only.
Load up 50 rounds of ammo and get the bitch zeroed at 300 yards.
It'd be quicker for sure!!
And the double check the pistol off a rest.
I should be able to get that done in a week, shouldn't I??
