I just got the usual " parts on the restricted list" response from Taurus recently regarding a 608 that I needed a retainer pin and firing pin spring for. Pissed off that they are requiring me to spend the money to ship the revolver to them, I dug around my spare parts and found another firing pin spring, snipped and fit it to perform flawlessly, then I used a decapping pin cut to fit, now my 608 is back up and running.

I can understand some parts needing to be installed by a competent gun smith, but Taurus is really restrictive about their parts in general, they don't want anyone, even certified gun smiths doing the repairs. I won't buy another Taurus for this reason, I want a firearm that can be worked on or tuned up locally if so desired.

Good that you were handy enough to get it working without Taurus' help.

I agree with you on avoiding Taurus.

I keep hearing this about Taurus. They beat their chest about being (from there website) "The Taurus Unlimited Lifetime Repair Policy™ is just that. The lifetime of the gun...not the buyer. This is the first warranty of its type in the industry. No other manufacturer has the confidence to extend this kind of offer. Except us."

We know that's bull. HiPoint has the same warranty and they actually honor it. My pharmacist has a Taurus 608 that he's been waiting 2 years to get a rear sight blade from them. He told me 3 months ago they shipped him one and it's the wrong part.

I've never owned, nor shot a Taurus...mostly because I've read way too many posts from people complaining about both the firearms as well as customer service, or the lack of it.

I have several Taurus products, several Rossi's also. I have never had a problem with their service department due to never having need to use their service department. I bought my first Rossi back in 1975 and it is still shooting today. Bought my first Taurus back in the 1980s I think.

As for getting things fixed locally, that ain't going to happen around here!

I do all of my own work because there is only one gunsmith in a 500 mile radius and he, as the official butt hole of the gun world, would want more than the cost of the gun to do a repair.

If I run into need for a restricted part it is probably because I took the gun apart, lost a part, and the company wants to insure it is reassembled properly when the new part is installed.

Now Mo, that sounds fairly gun snobbish... we know the court of public opinion is alive and well with Hipoint firearms too.(meaning folks bash Hipoint) But we know differnt cause we took the chance. Taurus may have bad service, but they sell thousands of firearms and we hear only about a miniscule % of them on forums either good or bad. And we all know that bad publicity outpaces nothing wrong by a wide margin.

I have to agree Randy! There are A LOT of satisfied Taurus customers. Actually, I’ve been looking at a Taurus Mod 66 in ss 4". Well priced but I just haven't been able to talk myself into it.

I'd think I'd rather have a used S&W highway patrolman than the new Mod 66 for the same price.

They have great warranty but they need to back it. If they were as responsive as MOM, they'd be doing twice
what they are now i sales.

I have a surplus Taurus 82, great gun but from before the lifetime warranty. I was looking at getting a 66 last week but had a S&W Highway Patrolman looking at me funny so I brought it home with me instead. Sorry Ex.

Actually, you'll see a better "Pro" opinion for Hi Points than for Taurus. I see posts all the time on Facebook where a guy will say "no Hi Points" and man does he get jumped on...whereas with the Taurus, there will be one or two "I've never had problems" and a ton of complaints. I'm looking seriously at the new 995 in woodland camo...

Big, heavy, N-frame Smith. It will work well with any possible .357 load -- great revolver: Congratulations.

just last week I read an article about S&W and it wasn't flattering. Does that mean I run out and sell my wife's 637 snub? :dunno: The gun shoots perfect, there are only a few things wrong with it and those are our fault- it's too small for both our hands, it only handles .38sp to +P, it only holds five rounds, and we likely paid too much for it. Nothing to do with S&W at all, but the article said their guns are generally unsafe. :dunno:

Did S&W fix that free of charge, no questions asked, and return it to him with an extra ...maga... speed loader? ( You know, like a certain reputed ... cheap, low quality manufacturer of junk guns does ... )

Maybe reputations are sometimes over-rated. :dunno:

Anything made by man is subject to failure. Just the way the world is. Hope your friend wasn't hurt when it let loose.
