Some time ago I got a Mossberg Patriot in 308. The gun shoots pretty nice but there is a lot of flex in the plastic stock even though the barrel is free floated. I couldn't get it to group better than 1.5" at 50 yards and that sucks. I want this rifle to shoot that at 500 yards (I know this probably won't happen but I have to try). This is what I'm starting with.

This is her new clothes.

This is a Boyd's Varmint Thumbhole stock in their camo laminate. I didn't add any special stuff but it comes with a plastic trigger guard since the original is molded into the stock. A longer rear action screw and a wood screw for the trigger guard and a standard Boyd's 1/2" buttpad. It also has three sling studs already installed, one for a bipod and two for a sling. Cost to my door was $145. Not bad since nobody else makes a stock for the Patriot.

Image

I do have to use the plastic magwell that also supports the action which will make pillar bedding a bitch. What else is new, grandpa always said "nothing worthwhile is easy". Well let's see if this stock is cut out right for it.

Image

Well, it fits like a glove. A little wiggling and it sits in there perfect, no extra fitting, nice and snug. Now lets see if the action fits as well.

Image

Dropped right in, a little bit of play but I do plan on bedding the action if I can figure out a good way to get pillars in it. I'll probably have to permanently install the magwell with some JB Weld or something. Then pillar bed it before I can bed the action. This is what it looks like now.

Image

I like the look and it feels wonderful. I'll have to make a cheek riser to add about a half inch to the stock since I had to use medium height scope rings for the 50mm objective on the scope. I'll try to keep ya all posted as the project progresses.

Looks Good Tolley!!

Boyd's makes a pretty nice stock for the money from what I've seen.

My SIL had a thumbhole stock on his 30-06 Weatherby Vanguard
And a fellow I sold a 700 Remington heavy barreled 22-250 to bought one too.

I didn't shoot their rifles - but they seem very comfortable a and well made.

I'm waiting to see if your accuracy gets better with this stock - I sure hope it does!!
A possible range report in the making... (-:

That looks great Scott!

Bedding a rifle...I don't even know what that is much less the reasons for it or how to do it. :dunno: I'll stick with my amateur black powder stock mangling... :groan:

I watched it tonight and it looks like a hell of a stock for the money!!
I like the target rifle type flatter bottom toward the front on it too.

And I'd have to say that Tolley is much more handsome, smarter and sounds a lot better than John Goodman...
