Great story. I laughed at your pain -- with gusto!

Over the years I've heard similar stories from other ranch folks so I believe every word of it.

Now that's quite a story!! :D

I'm kinda thinking we made a trip to the emergency room after this...

I always wondered if a guy could do like Mongo and just punch a deer in the face...
I know from experience it doesn't work with a cow - so whole being a "cow puncher" thing must just be an expression.

And, I think you might be on to something with the corn-fed venison...
It's how we approach it that needs work.
What you did was on the right track - but tying that rope off to the bumper of your pick-up would of helped a lot, I think.

Another approach would be to start with a younger deer - a fawn even - feed until grown - then we'd have some good corn-fed venison!! :D

I'm laughing so hard right now, I'm gonna have to go change my under wear.

So, I bet you have a totally different respect for deer now, hate actually.

Rope a deer, now that's something I would have tried. Your story has saved me from certain death. Although, it gives me other ideas, not necessarily good one's, but ideas none the less.

Your story got me thinking about something a ranch hand out here in Arizona told me. Many years ago, my buddy and I were hunting some public land, and we had managed to get two flat tires, and only one spare. We walked about 15 miles to a ranch house to get help, and one of the ranch hands told us about a monster couse deer he had roped and then notched it's right ear with his pocket knife. That same hunting season my buddy killed a big record book couse on that ranch with a rather fresh chunk of ear that appeared to have been cut out. But based on your great story, and the fact that I know how powerful a deer is, I have always doubted this cowboys story of notching the ear, even more so now.

I've killed a lot of deer with similar looking injuries, they get torn up all the time, especially during the rut.
