I had just moved to Northern Arizona, and had never seen an elk before. So I decided to go out driving around on the public lands in the dark hours of the morning hoping to see some elk. I drove down this one road and immediately spotted bulls, still in velvet that were feeding about 75 yards off the road. To this day, I really don't know what inspired me to do what I did, but all I can say, is it was stupid and thoughtless.

When I saw these bulls I was over come with excitement and amazement. Then for reasons I still can't fathom, I positioned my car so the head lights were on them. Then I got out of my car and walked very slowly toward them, keeping myself in the direct beam of the head lights. To my surprise, I found myself standing right in the middle of them just mere feet, even inches from them. I pondered slapping one on the butt, just so I could say I did it. But as I stood there, I realized just how big they were, and now they were they were acting really nervous, aggressively scraping their hooves on the ground, making noises, huffing kind of. At this point I was completely surrounded by them, and was now wondering if I was going to be able to get out of there without getting severely injured, or worse. They had completely stopped feeding were totally focused on me. The two biggest ones, 6x6 bulls, were brushing up against me, almost knocked me down. But I realized at this point that making any quick moves might spark a real bad event, so I remained as calm as possible, and then began backing away a foot or so at a time, until i was finally 30 or 40 yards away, and then ran for my car.

I had one of my Son's with me that morning who was sitting in the car watching all this. To this day he still tells this story to all his fellow Marines. Man am I glad I didn't slap one on the butt.

I think you're damned lucky you didn't get well stomped.

But, since you got out without injury, it makes a good story.

If the mentally deficient are not allowed to own guns then why should they be allowed to make gun laws?

Lucy is an understatement. When we're green horns, as I was at the time, we do some pretty stupid and thoughtless things, such as thinking about slapping a bull elk on the ass! Or trying to rope a deer, that beats all I think.
