Many years ago, like 1960-ish, my Sister and her husband decided to take a cross country vacation. If memory serves me correctly, they were traveling from San Francisco to some where in New York state. at the time, they had two children, little David and his sister Jacklyn. Both were quite young, David was about 5 years old. So while traveling through the Midwest they stopped at a gas station to get gas and use the restroom. Ted took David with him to the restroom to go potty, and my sister took little Jacklyn in to change her diaper. The gas station attendant had finished pumping the gas, checking the oil, water, tires, cleaned the windshield, accepted payment, and a tip I'm sure, something people did back in those days, and off drives the family of 4.

The way I've heard this story, it was about 7 or 8 hours later when they pulled into a small town, and then grabbed a motel for the night. They were all in bed when my sister suddenly sat straight up in bed and yelled, "Oh my Lord, where is David?". Yep, they had left David at the gas station some 500 miles back.

Fortunately, Ted remembered the name of the town where he got gas, but since he paid with cash, he didn't know the exact location of the filling station, specifically, the street name, so information wasn't able to help him. Mind you, back in those days, the information hi way was very slow and limited. So he called the state police, Nebraska I think, and they didn't know anything about a 5 year old child that had been found at a gas station. But they called the police or sheriff of that town, and sure enough, as it turned out, David was safe and sound, and had been taken home by one of the cops, who's sweet wife had fed him and put him to bed already.

Due to the fact that Ted had driven for a good 10 or 12 hours already, he didn't think it would be a good or safe idea to drive back that night, nor did the officer on the phone. So bright and early the next morning they drove back to that town, to the police department, and then retrieved little David who was patiently waiting for Mom and Dad.

That's a close call! And these days, the folks would likely be in trouble too!
Glad the kids were OK!

Sorry to see you go Dean. Never enough time and it makes
us all realize just what being mortal is. You have been a true friend to me
and I will miss you every day.

If the mentally deficient are not allowed to own guns then why should they be allowed to make gun laws?

Hey, the part about the kid being ok, I gotta be honest here, and bear in mind this is my nephew I'm referring to, but little David is anything but ok. I'll elaborate with another contest story about David at the age of 12 yrs. old..

Edit: Out of respect for the mentally ill, I'm not going to further elaborate about David, therefore not an appropriate contest story. One can only pray for the mentally ill.
